Our mission
The University of Bonn founded the Bonn Research Alliance (BORA) in 2018 to connect with non-university research in a more strategic and structured way. BORA currently encompasses 12 non-university research and capacity building institutions from the national research societies Max Planck and Fraunhofer, the research associations Helmholtz und Leibniz, the regional Johannes Rau Research Foundation, as well as the United Nations University, based in the Bonn region. The network’s inter-institutional cooperation is based on a long history of bilateral and multifaceted cooperation.
We are: Why we exist
In BORA, the member institutions form interest groups that collaboratively address current developments and overarching challenges globally in the science landscape. Engagement in dialogue across leaders and colleagues aims at sharpening the profile and shaping the strategy of the scientific landscape in the Bonn region together.

With our work, we strive to realize an excellent, internationally thriving scientific landscape on the Rhine with a global focus and outlook. We aim to be perceived internationally as a place to be for innovative science through networking and collaboration.

Scientific excellence, societal impact, global relevance – research has many facets. In BORA, we devote our attention to joint achievements in research, education and capacity building. Through our commitment to collaboration and cooperation in the network, we want to make the best use of the diverse and vibrant research landscape in Bonn. Therefore, we contribute competence from our institutions and networks to shaping and developing the region to the benefit of addressing global challenges.
BORA promotes an open atmosphere of cooperation. We emphasize dynamism and teamwork in collaboration, to improve information and operative flows across institutional walls, and to overcome the siloization of the scientific landscape in the long run. We explore synergies and rely on proactivity to extend and intensify our collaborations, to combine our expertise where appropriate and fruitful.

We do: Our work & how we organize ourselves
The Staff Unit for BORA hosts a regular leadership forum, as a place to be for information exchange and strategic discussion among the heads of BORA member institutions. Shared (or bilateral) concerns in joint recruitment and appointments, dual career and career opportunities for early-career researchers can be addressed as appropriate. Additionally, the Staff Unit works to strengthen opportunity-based collaboration across BORA members’ units with a view to common goals and fields of action. Collaboration to create a warm onboarding culture in the science region of Bonn follows our big goals.
In BORA, we show our cooperation and successes on a common platform and engage in joint public relations activities. Along our work, we develop a joint narrative and future-oriented strategies for the enhancement of the profile of the science region Bonn and beyond.
