Thematic Area Mathematics and Modelling
Thanks to the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM), Bonn has established itself as an international hotspot for mathematicians. Many experts teach and conduct research in the field of mathematics and modeling here. We bring together their expertise on this page.
As one of eleven German Universities of Excellence, the University of Bonn is one of the strongest research universities in Europe. It is known for its internationally networked top-level research, which is based on a collaborative, innovative and international research culture.
Joint research projects (funded by the DFG, BMBF, NRW) and collaboration with one or more BORA members since 2018 on the topic of mathematics and modelling are presented here.

Joint Research Projects
The Hausdorff Center of Mathematics (HCM) is a Cluster of Excellence of the University of Bonn and is supported by the four mathematical institutes of the University of Bonn, the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM) and the Institute for Social and Economic Sciences. With six departments, the cluster's spectrum ranges from pure and applied mathematics to mathematically oriented research in economics and interdisciplinary research. Identifying and addressing mathematical challenges of the 21st century is one of the main goals of HCM, as is the promotion of young scientists in an independent and international environment. Since its inception in 2006, the cluster has been successfully renewed twice, in 2012 and most recently in 2018 for another seven years.
BORA cooperation partner
Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM)
The aim of the project MaGriDo is to develop methods of machine learning that require significantly less data than before or can make predictions that are consistent with existing knowledge.
Project partners, funding and project duration
The project partners are Fraunhofer SCAI, the University of Bonn (as coordinator), die Technische Universität Berlin, the Technische Universität Braunschweig, and – as associated partners from industry – Covestro AG and Schott AG.
MaGriDo is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the "Mathematics for Innovations" program.
Project duration: 04/2020 – 03/2023
Mathematics, Modelling and Simulation of Complex Systems (TRA Modelling)
The six Transdisciplinary Research Areas (TRAs) at the University of Bonn offer spaces for innovation in research and teaching. In the TRA "Mathematics, Modelling and Simulation of Complex Systems", researchers from a broad range of disciplines create models that not only describe complex systems, but are able to analyze their behavior. This is achieved by the interaction of mathematical modelling, classical observational methods, data analytics, data simulation, and creative spirit.
The University of Bonn and the members of BORA cooperate in teaching through joint professorships and in-depth courses. The cooperation is particularly multifaceted in the qualification of young scientists. In the field of mathematics, there are three doctoral programs.

Education Programs
Located at the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics and supported by Germany’s Excellence Initiative, BIGS-M is home to all of the University’s doctoral candidates in mathematics and contributes to Bonn’s excellent international reputation in the field.
Involved BORA Institutions
Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM)
In cooperation with the University of Bonn, the renowned Bonn Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics offers a PhD program with a special focus on the study of moduli.

Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM)
The goal of the Hausdorff Center of Mathmatics is to identify and address mathematical challenges of the 21st century, to advance groundbreaking fundamental mathematical research worldwide, and to develop the mathematical methods and tools required by science and society.
Part of the Hausdorff Center is also a graduate school: The Bonn International Graduate School of Mathematics (BIGS-M) hosts all doctoral students of mathematics and contributes to the outstanding international reputation of the university in this field. The duration of the program is usually 3 years, and the doctorate (Dr. rer nat.) can be earned as a degree.

Arithmeum
The Arithmeum presents the history of mechanical calculating machines, as well as the computing of today, in an aesthetically pleasing environment.
Mathematical walks
Mathematics can be experienced and discovered - all around us! With the Mathematical Walks, we want to encourage school classes to do mathematics outside the classroom.
Bonn Math Club
In the Bonn Math Club, pupils from elementary school onwards meet with students and lecturers every Saturday to “do math” together. We want to arouse fascination, make math fun and specifically promote young math talents.
